Out Of Left Field, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Rijeka, 2011
video excerpt – Protected space:
performance at the opening of the exhibition Out Of Left Field; security guards: Helena Perić, Miroslav Delač
At the entry to one of the rooms in the MMCA in Rijeka stand two security guards, giving everybody a security check, including an external inspection of clothing, and other objects, like bags, parcels and so on of those people who wanted to enter the protected room. While they were in the protected room (in which there was nothing but a few chairs) the visitors additionally had to abide by a number of rules of behaviour of the kind that, for security reasons, are often applied in museums. The inspection at the entry and the special behaviour regime was meant to make the protected space “more secure” than the rest of the museum. The whole exhibition space became in that way divided into two parts: the protected part and the unprotected part.
The protected room was empty. The main content of this space became an increased level of security and some kind of ‘choreography’ performed by the visitors who followed the safety rules inside the protected space.
Rules for visitors:
Carry your bag or backpack in front of you – not on your back or by your side.
Coats and jackets should be hung over the left arm.
Walk at a moderate speed without sudden movements.
Do not approach other visitors too closely.
Do not rustle plastic bags or other stuff.
Respect the privacy of other visitors.
Avoid loud conversation and laughter.
It is forbidden to bring in any type of food or drink.
Move in the stream of visitors.
It is forbidden to touch the exhibits.
Photography is not allowed.
Mobile phones must be switched off.
Hodajte umjerenim korakom bez naglih kretnji.
Ne približavajte se previše ostalim posjetiteljima.
Ne šuškajte vrećicama ni stvarima.
Poštujte privatnost ostalih posjetitelja.
Izbjegavajte glasan razgovor ili smijeh.
Zabranjen unos i konzumacija pića ili hrane.
Krećite se u struji posjetitelja.
Ne dirajte izložene radove.
Zabranjeno fotografiranje.
Isključite mobitele.
